God Bless America Sculpture Returns to Anamosa

Anamosa is getting back their beloved statue.

The “God Bless America” sculpture is returning to town for the second time. The 25-foot sculpture by Seward Johnson pays tribute to artist Grant Wood’s iconic painting “American Gothic”, which features the older farmer with his pitchwork and his daughter by his side.

Anamosa is Grant Wood’s birthplace, which is why Anamosa Chamber Director Leanna Boone believes the sculpture belongs in their town permanently. It’s only here temporarily for now, but Boone says they’re thrilled to have it back.

The sculpture arrived in downtown Anamosa this week. A crane was brought in Thursday to set it up in the green space along the 300 block of East Main Street.

Boone encourages everyone to visit Anamosa to see the “God Bless America” sculpture and get your photo taken with the famous farm couple. She says they community will be planning events around the sculpture as well.
