Linn County Deputy Shot During Robbery Attempt

On June 20, 2021 at approximately 2219 hours the Linn County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an alarm at the Casey’s General Store located in Coggon at 5110 Hwy 13. A Linn County Deputy arrived on scene shortly after the initial call. As the deputy entered the store he was met by an armed suspect. The suspect fired multiple times and the deputy was struck by multiple rounds from the armed suspect. The suspect left in a van and went north out of Coggon and was spotted by another responding deputy who pursued the suspect vehicle. The suspect vehicle crashed on North 3RD St in Coggon, on the north edge of town and the suspect fled on foot. Numerous agencies from all over eastern Iowa responded to the area to assist in the search for the fleeing suspect. At the time of this press release the suspect has not been found.

The search is still ongoing and the Linn County Sheriff’s Office asks that if anyone sees a suspicious person in the Coggon area to call the Linn County Sheriff’s Office or your local law enforcement agency. The suspect is a black male, mid 30s, approximately 5’10 to 6’2, approximately 200 to 220 pounds, wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.

The Deputy was flown by Lifeguard to UIHC with serious injuries. At this time we are not releasing the name of the injured deputy. This remains an active investigation and further information will be released as it becomes available.
