A Flood Warning continues for the Wapsipinicon River in Independence.
On Tuesday afternoon, the river had reached the flood stage of 12 feet. It’s expected to rise to a crest of 14.3 feet just after midnight tonight, with moderate flooding forecasted.
At 14 feet, water would affect homes and streets in low-lying areas of Independence and Littleton. At 15 feet, water would start to affect the cemetery on the south side of Independence – and in Littleton, it would affect homes along Water, State and Benton Streets, as well as cabins west of the river.
The Independence Fire Department says with the river coming up fast, they’re reminding residents who live near the river to move their cars away from flood-prone areas. They say some of those areas are starting to take on water – and in the matter of an hour or so, your car could be surrounded.
The Wapsi River is forecasted to fall below flood stage in Independence early Thursday.
