The Turkey River’s crest in Elkader this week is the 4th highest on record.
The river crested at just under 23 feet on Monday morning – eleven feet above flood stage. The Elkader Fire Department says sandbagging efforts have kept the town mostly dry. Even so, Brian Bruening Boudouani owns a restaurant right beside the river and says it will be closed for 10 days.
The building’s basement was flooded with about three feet of water. Jennifer Cowsert is the city administrator in Elkader.
On Friday and Saturday, nearly a foot of rain fell in some areas of northern Iowa, leading to flood warnings in Elkader, Garber and Independence.
