One Dead in Officer-Involved Shooting in Jones County

One person is dead following a shooting involving several officers in Jones County.

The incident happened Tuesday night south of Martelle at 23966 42nd Street. According to a press release issued by the Iowa Department of Public Safety, the Jones County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from the home – and when deputies arrived, they found a large structure on fire and encountered a person with a knife.

Multiple law enforcement officers from surrounding communities also responded to the scene.

Initial reports indicate the person did not comply with orders given by law enforcement to drop the knife. Law enforcement then deployed lethal and non-lethal rounds, with the person receiving multiple gunshot wounds and dying at the scene.

Several officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation, including two Jones County Sheriff’s deputies, three Anamosa Police officers and one Linn County Sheriff’s deputy.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the officer-involved shooting and the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the fire. No other details are being released at this time, including the names of those involved.
