Authorities have identified the man who was killed during a shooting involving several officers in Jones County this week.
The Iowa Department of Public Safety says 45-year old Jeremy Berg of Elkport died at the scene on Tuesday night.
The Jones County Sheriff’s Office had received a 911 call from a home south of Martelle at 23966 42nd Street – and when deputies arrived, they found a large structure on fire and encountered Berg, who had a knife.
Multiple law enforcement officers from surrounding communities also responded to the scene.
Initial reports indicated Berg did not comply with orders given by law enforcement to drop the knife. Law enforcement then deployed lethal and non-lethal rounds, with Berg receiving multiple gunshot wounds and dying at the scene.
Several officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation, including two Jones County Sheriff’s deputies, three Anamosa Police officers and one Linn County Sheriff’s deputy.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting and the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the fire.
No further details are being released at this time.
