Two deputies involved in a fatal shooting in Jones County three weeks ago are returning to work.
On August 31st, several law enforcement officers were involved in a shooting that killed 45-year old Jeremy Berg of Elkport. The Jones County Sheriff’s Office had received a 911 call from a home south of Martelle at 23966 42nd Street – and when deputies arrived, they found a large structure on fire and encountered Berg, who had a knife.
A report issued by the Attorney General’s Office concluded that Berg did not comply with orders given by law enforcement to drop the knife. Law enforcement first deployed non-lethal rounds with no effect on Berg. When he then charged officers with the knife, they fired multiple gunshot wounds. Berg died at the scene.
The Attorney General’s Office says the two deputies involved in the shooting were legally justified in their actions.
The Jones County Sheriff’s Office says since the incident on August 31st, the two Jones County deputies involved had been on paid administrative leave. Three Anamosa police officers and one Linn County Sheriff’s deputy were also involved in the shooting.
The two Jones County deputies will be returning to duty this week.
