New Vienna Man Among Three Semi Drivers Involved in Chain-Reaction Crash

A New Vienna man was among three semi drivers involved in a chain-reaction crash in Linn County on Wednesday morning.

It happened just southeast of Springville at the intersection of Highway 151 and Wendling Lane shortly after 7 am.

The Linn County Sheriff’s Office says a semi driven by 60-year old Michael Lacourciere of Morton, Illinois was pulling an oversized load westbound on Highway 151, but he didn’t notice the width restriction of the construction zone was limited to one lane. He stopped the semi on the road, pulled onto the shoulder and began backing up.

The Sheriff’s Office says because of that, westbound traffic came to a stop, causing a semi driven by 60-year old Gary Schulte of New Vienna to rear-end another semi driven by 64-year old Wayne Myhre of Bloomington, Wisconsin – which pushed into another semi in front of it, driven by 64-year old Ronald Fagan of Onslow.

Myhre was transported to a local hospital for what authorities believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Schulte was cited for failing to stop at a safe and assured distance.

Lacourciere was cited for oversized load permit violation and failing to maintain control. He was also warned for unsafe backing.

Traffic flow was interrupted briefly while the road was cleared of debris.
