Cascade schools went into lockdown Tuesday afternoon after a report of a gunman at a convenience store in town.
The Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office says several law enforcement agencies responded to the Casey’s General Store on 1st Avenue East in Cascade shortly after 12:30 pm. A Casey’s employee had called authorities, reported that a man entered the store and displayed a large handgun while looking for his estranged wife, who works at Casey’s. The man, later identified as 45-year old Daniel Dossey, fled the store after learning his wife wasn’t working.
Authorities tracked down Dossey’s vehicle outside his home on 2nd Avenue Northwest. As they worked to establish a perimeter around the home, they could hear noises consistent with a firearm being discharged.
They found Dossey unresponsive in the garage of the home with self-inflicted injuries. No one else was home at the time. Dossey was transported to a Dubuque hospital before being transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Due to the immediate threat facing the Cascade community Tuesday, Cascade High School, Cascade Elementary, Aquin Catholic School and Aquin Little Angels Daycare were placed into lockdown. The lockdown lasted for about a half hour.
The incident remains under investigation.
