DNR Investigating Fish Kill Near Dyersville

The DNR is investigating a fish kill on Hickory and Hewitt Creeks near Dyersville.

The fish kill was reported Monday, but the caller noticed dead fish on Sunday after the weekend’s rainfall.

DNR staff spent Monday and Tuesday looking for the source of the fish kill. They followed dead fish starting at the Highway 136 bridge upstream for about five miles to an unnamed tributary of Hickory Creek. They estimate thousands of fish were killed, including white suckers, minnows, stonerollers and creek chubs.

The DNR says the likely source of the fish kill is manure washed into the stream from an animal feeding operation in the upper part of the watershed.

The investigation is ongoing as the DNR awaits lab test results from water samples.
