Delaware County Master Gardeners Announce ‘Mondays in March’ Topics

The Delaware County Master Gardeners will once again host their “Mondays in March” series next month.

Each year, the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Delaware County Master Gardeners hold an educational lecture series called “Mondays in March”. These presentations are designed to educate and entertain anyone interested in gardening and growing. All programs are held at 7:00 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 116 Guetzko Court, in Manchester.  The public is invited to attend, with a $2 donation taken at the door, and door prizes given away each week.

Monday, March 4, “Landscaping Small Areas for Sun & Shade-Use of Yard Art & Water Features” with Keith Kovarik

Join K & K Gardens owner, Keith as he shares his expertise for landscaping those small areas in your yard and incorporating yard art and water features. K & K Gardens is a retail garden center featuring an acre of display gardens, garden cottage, ponds, and perennial gardens. Specializing in perennials, tree, shrubs, water, gardens, hosta, and anything else that grows in Iowa.

Monday, March 11, “Prairie Grasses and Native Plants in the Garden” with Sondra Cabell

Native plants have become recognized for their importance to native pollinators and wildlife, their adaptation to local climates and their relative ease of care.  While colorful forbs have led the way in this recognition, native grasses should not be overlooked as an important addition to this movement.  Sondra Cabell, Buchanan County Naturalist will share her favorite native grasses and plants to enhance your garden landscape.

Monday, March 18, “Foraging for Survival” with Scott & Cherie Delperdang

Could you feed your family in a disaster situation if there was no grocery store available? Did you know there are many edible foods found right on your property? Learn to identify some edible foods and lots of other tips for survival. Scott and Cherie Delperdang have been Delaware County Master Gardeners for 18 years. Their interests include  homesteading, hobby farming, canning and preserving food, and the important one: safely finding or foraging for food from the land.

Monday, March 25, “Succulents-What’s New and Incorporating into the Garden and Containers” with Joshua Spece.

Colorful. Fun. Easy to grow. What’s not to like about succulents?! Succulents thrive in Iowa’s warm winters and are perfect in containers on the deck and patios where other plants bake in the heat.  Learn more about caring for, propagating, and new varieties of these popular plants from Joshua Spece, co-owner of In the Country Garden & Gifts in Independence, Iowa.
