The Beckman Blazer Baseball program won their 6th state tournament championship in the 13th title game of the program’s history Saturday afternoon with a 9-6 victory over Carroll Kuemper. The win was the 30th of 42 state tournament games since their first title in 1968. Forty-three year head coach Tom Jenk Jr. was inside the press box at Principal Park taking in his 5th state championship for a program he has led since 1975. Coach Jenk was very happy to be in attendance and was very thankful to Paramount Ambulance Service of Dubuque who brought him and his wife Pam and to the Iowa Cubs and Iowa High School Athletic Association staff who made them feel very welcome and comfortable:
The Blazers got off to a great start leading 9-0 after the first inning until the 4th, then a five-run 6th for the Knights really made things interesting. Beckman senior Riley Legrand who hadn’t pitched since late June because of a hand injury came in and closed things out in the 7th to earn the save:
This years team improved to 32-11 to became the 7th team to win 32 or more games in a season since 1988 and just the fifth team under coach Jenk to be able to say they won their last game. The program will say goodbye to 8 seniors, besides Legrand, Noah Sabers, Cody Feldman, Sam Stelken, Cody Goedken, Brady Arens, Colin Koelker and Sam Oberbroeckling.
