HS FOOTBALL: 1st Round Playoff Preview

By Jon Swisher-Sports Director:

The 2017 high school football playoffs begin Friday night. The KMCH coverage area has three teams remaining and two of the three will host first round contests with 7pm kick-off times.
The Class 3A 7-2 West Delaware Hawks are making the program’s 23rd appearance since 1986 with a record of 28-21. It’s the 10th season in a row that WD has made the postseason after winning their 4th straight district title and 6th in the past 8 years. The Hawks will host 8th-ranked 8-1 Waverly-Shell Rock in a re-match of last years first round game, Hawks head coach Doug Winkowitsch talks about their opponent and what they have to do to be successful:

It’ll be Waverly-Shell Rock’s 8th trip in a row and 22nd overall. The Hawks are lethal both on the ground as running back Caleb Kehrli has gathered 971 yards and 15 TDs and by air with Nick Casey being fourth in 3A with 1,639 passing yards. The             Go-Hawks only loss was a 20-14 setback to Cedar Rapids Xavier in Week 7. W-SR is in the top five in 3A in offense with 38 points per game and defense only allowing 9 points a contest. All the coverage tonight live on KMCH and KMCH.com starting with the pregame show around 6:30pm as Sports Director Jon Swisher will have Hawks head coach Doug Winkowitsch on before Jamie, Aaron and Bill take it from Brown Field.

Our Area Online and Playback Game of the week will come from St. Ansgar as the Class 10th-ranked 8-1 Buccaneers of East Buchanan travel to face the 7th-rated 9-0 Saints. It’s the 18th appearance for both schools, EB is on a three year run while St. Ansgar is making their 12th straight trip that include a state title in 2011. A match-up of big front lines, offenses who like to run the ball a lot, especially the Saints going up against a Bucs defense who only allows 9 points a game. Bucs head coach Jerry Alden explains the meeting from his perspective:

All that coverage live on KMCH.com and played back after the WD game with Kevin Schuchmann and North Linn head coach Jared Collum.

Sports Director Jon Swisher will be in Cascade providing updates on the Class 2A 2nd-ranked 9-0 Cougars hosting 6-3 West Liberty. The Comets are making their ninth appearance, the first since 2013. Cascade has qualified for the 11th time, the eighth since 2008. The Cougars set program history with the first 9-0 campaign and are the lone undefeated team in 2A. Cascade is second in 2A in scoring defense at 10 points per game. Haris Hoffman leads the Cougars’ offense with 1,486 passing yards, and Austin Lieurance is just shy of 1,000 yards of rushing.
