HS Football: Preseason Rankings And Independence Preview

The 2017 high school football season officially began Thursday night around the state with two games:

Central City fell at home to Lone Tree 26-18

H-L-V of Victor hammered WACO of Wayland 67-20

Friday night, week zero play continues as 19 contests will take place including one area school in action as Class 3A Independence hosts Class 2A 9th-ranked Dike-New Hartford. The Mustangs agreed to play a tenth game to help out the Wolverines who lost a team out of district #3 when the Collins-Maxwell/Baxter school district split in the off-season to form Collins-Maxwell and Baxter, two 8-player teams now playing an all non-district football schedule this season. Independence is a program looking for improvement and trying to forget about the struggles of a year ago. KMCH Sports Director Jon Swisher has a preview of the Mustangs:

The Fresh/Soph game will get underway at 5pm with the varsity contest around 7:30pm at Leinbaugh Field in Independence.

A few KMCH area coverage schools preparing for week one contests will be in front of crowds tonight in scrimmage or game like settings:

The annual West Delaware Silver Bowl at Brown Field will begin at 6:15pm with the Freshmen and Sophomore scrimmages followed by team introductions of the cross country, volleyball and football programs then the varsity will take the field around 7:30pm.

North Linn will hold an open practice on their game field from 6-8pm and ask fans to bring bottles of Gatorade for donation to get in.

Monticello will host Dubuque Wahlert at Dean Nelson Field, starting with the JV at 5:15pm followed by the varsity at 6pm.

Cascade hosts Anamosa with the JV scrimmaging at 6pm then the varsity at 7:30pm.

Western Dubuque will travel to Cedar Rapids Xavier. The sophomore’s will start at 5pm with the varsity around 6pm.

 

The first preseason media rankings in football have been released:

In Class 4A, Ankeny Centennial is number one, Iowa City West is 4th, Cedar Rapids Washington is 6th and CR Prairie is tied for 9th.

Class 3A, Pella has the top spot, CR Xavier is 3rd, the West Delaware Hawks are tied for 4th.

Class 2A, number one is Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, Mount Vernon is tied for 2nd.

Class 1A, Iowa City Regina is on top.

Class A, first is Council Bluffs St. Albert, Lisbon is 7th. North Linn and East Buchanan are receiving votes.

8-player, Harris-Lake Park is one, Midland and Elkader Central are receiving votes.
