After a few months process of gathering input and information the Western Dubuque Community School District board of education voted 3-2 last night to accept an invitation from the Mississippi Valley Conference to join the league starting in the 2018-19 school year. The MVC will now become a 16-team conference with the addition of the Bobcats and Iowa City Liberty a new school that opens next Fall. Western Dubuque has been a member of the WaMaC Conference since 2003, after being in the Big Bend Conference since 1987. With an enrollment figure of 724 students it has clearly been the largest school in the WaMaC. In the MVC, it will be the 4th-smallest, only larger than Cedar Rapids Xavier, Dubuque Wahlert and Liberty.
Western Dubuque becomes the fourth KMCH area coverage school to decide to switch conferences in the past few months. The WaMaC will become a 14-team league with Anamosa leaving for the River Valley Conference. The Blue Raiders have been in the WaMaC since 2007. Ed-Co has opted to head back to their original long time conference home in the Tri-Rivers entering for the 2017-18 campaign, they exiting the Upper Iowa along with Starmont where they both have been since 2013. The Stars will be back in the TRC for the 2018-19 school year.
