The 2017 WaMaC conference tournament began with pool play in Maquoketa and South Tama yesterday.
The West Delaware Hawks improved to 23-18 with a 2-1 match mark and 5-2 set record on the night as they beat Maquoketa and Benton Community 2-0, then lost to Class 4A 7th-ranked Center Point-Urbana 2-1. Losing 21-18, winning 21-18 and falling 18-16 in the final match of the night. Every other match was won 2-0 which had things at least fifteen minutes ahead of schedule most of the night. Class 3A 11th-rated Beckman was the other team to go unbeaten, with CP-U, achieving a 3-0 record by taking down Anamosa, Vinton-Shellsburg and Independence. The Mustangs went 2-1 with victories over Vinton-Shellsburg and Anamosa. The Lady Raiders defeated Vinton-Shellsburg 2-0. CP-U, Beckman, West Delaware and Independence round out the top four with Benton, Maquoketa, Anamosa and V-S finishing in the bottom half.
In South Tama-
Mount Vernon and Western Dubuque captured 3-0 marks. The Class 4A 13th-rated Bobcats beat Central DeWitt, South Tama and Marion. Solon and Marion went 2-1 with South Tama, Central DeWitt, Clear Creek-Amana and Williamsburg finishing in the bottom four.
The top 8 schools advance on to the championship bracket in Marion inside the newer gym with first round matches starting at 4pm while the bottom eight compete in the old high school gym. Those times and match-ups will be announced later on today.
