HS Wrestling: West Delaware Opens Season With A Road Win

The West Delaware wrestling team opened its season last night with a 36-31 win over 10th ranked Waverly-Shell Rock. The Hawks got on the board first as third ranked junior Mitchel Mangold used a first period take down and a second period escape to defeat sixth ranked Dalton Woodyard 3-1. After back to back wins by the Go-Hawks, West Delaware picked up pins from junior Jordan Bries and senior Harrison Goebel to take a 15-6 lead. Waverly-Shell Rock then won five of the next six matches and took a 31-21 lead with just three matches to go. Junior Ryan Phillips cut the lead to four with a 1:17 fall over Andrew Schwab, before senior Cole Engel brought the Hawks within one point as he knocked off ninth ranked Ian Heise 6-2 with only one match remaining. West Delaware freshman Cael Meyer put the final touches on the dual meet as he pinned Dalton Rinnels in 1:10 to give the Hawks the 36-31 win as they start the season 1-0. West Delaware head coach Jeff Voss was very pleased with the effort of the kids in their first night out:

The Hawks will now turn their attention to tomorrow as they host their own Bob Murphy Invitational which features some great teams and a lot of good and highly ranked individuals:
