Man Fatally Struck by Train Near Independence

police-lightsINDEPENDENCE, Iowa (AP) – Officials have released more information about a man who was fatally struck by a train just outside Independence.

The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office says 40-year-old Thomas Lee Davis was hit Thursday night by a Canadian National Railway train near the Wapsipinicon River. Train operators told authorities they observed a man lying on the railroad tracks prior to the accident.

The operators applied emergency brakes, but could not stop the train.

Authorities do not suspect foul play. Davis’ body has been sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Ankeny.
