Oelwein Mayor Arrested for Sexually Abusing Two Girls

The mayor of Oelwein was arrested Monday for sexually abusing two children several years ago. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office says 36-year old Jason Manus of Oelwein, who was elected as mayor last fall, was taken into custody at his home Monday morning. The arrest follows a month long investigation with the DHS of a report that Manus sexually abused a 14-year old girl four times in July and August of 2010 and a nine-year old one time. The Sheriff’s Office says due to the statute of limitations, some of the crimes founded could not be filed. However, under Iowa law, any victim who is a minor has ten years after reaching their 18th birthday to report a sexual abuse. Manus faces five counts of Second Degree Sexual Abuse. He was transported to the Fayette County Jail Monday, with bond set at 125-thousand dollars cash. If convicted on the charges, Manus could face up to 125 years in prison and be placed on the sex offender registry. This is an ongoing criminal investigation and more charges could be filed. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office urges anyone who has any information on this investigation to contact them at 563-422-6067 extension 231 or 232.
