The rain this past week hasn’t been a big help to farmers who have been trying to work on their harvest.
This week’s Iowa Crops and Weather Report says there were only about three days suitable for fieldwork this past week – that’s the lowest this year since the last week of May. Just eight-percent of corn and 26-percent of beans have been harvested in Iowa through Sunday, putting the corn harvest more than two weeks behind average and soybeans nearly a week behind.
Around two inches of rain fell last week in Delaware County. We caught up with Delhi farmer Dale Heims last Friday.
Manchester farmer Steve Ries says last week’s rain didn’t set them back too far.
Another two inches of rain soaked into Delaware County’s farm fields again on Tuesday. Tom Wulfekuhle, who farms in the Greeley/Edgewood area, says some drier weather will help move the harvest along.
More rain is in the forecast Friday night through Saturday. We’ll be visiting with more local farmers over the next week or two as the “KMCH, Bring Me My Lunch” contest continues.
