Updated: Details Released on Train/Semi Collision in Ryan

Authorities released details this morning on the train and semi collision that happened in Ryan on Monday afternoon.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office says a semi trailer from Heartland Bean Meal LLC of Garrison was heading north on Highway 13 near the railroad crossing around 2:30 pm. The driver saw the railroad’s flashing lights and tried slowing his semi, but he shifted incorrectly and the semi stalled. The driver told authorities that he got the semi running again and tried making it through the railroad crossing before the train arrived, but the eastbound train hit the trailer of the semi, pushing it over 600 feet down the tracks.

The semi driver, Michael Wiedenhoff of Garrison, was not hurt. He has been charged with failing to properly stop at a railroad crossing.

Damage to the semi was estimated at $70,000. The Canadian National Railroad train sustained an estimated $10,000 in damage.
