Johnson Wins Open Seat for Iowa House District 67

Delaware County will have someone new representing them in Iowa House next year.

For the past twelve years, Monticello Republican Lee Hein served as the area’s State Representative in Des Moines – but last year’s redistricting left an open seat in this year’s November General Election.

Delaware County is now part of State District 67, which also includes southern Buchanan County and the far southwest corner of Dubuque County.

Republican Craig Johnson of Independence won the seat on Tuesday. Johnson is no stranger to the Iowa Legislature, currently serving as a State Senator. He told KMCH News Director Janelle Tucker that he’s thankful to be elected, with the opportunity to continue serving.

Johnson received 67-percent of the vote, defeating Democrat Terry McGovern of Earlville. McGovern says he feels grateful he had the opportunity to run for office.

The 90th Iowa General Assembly will get underway in Des Moines in two months on January 9th.
