Lang Requests New Trial in Murder of Independence Trooper
The man convicted of murdering an Iowa State Patrol is requesting a new trial.
Michael Lang of Grundy Center was found guilty by a jury last month in the death of Sergeant Jim Smith of Independence. Smith was shot and killed during a standoff at Lang’s home last year.
According to our news partner KCRG, Lang’s defense cites that there was not enough evidence “beyond a reasonable doubt” that he meant/planned to kill Sgt. Smith. Lang chose not to call any witnesses to the stand during his trial.
His murder conviction means a life sentence in prison.
A judge will hear his request for a new trial on June 27th.
