Delaware County Crews Working to Clear Roads

With two major winter storms back-to-back, Delaware County’s secondary roads crews have been working hard this past week.

County Engineer Rafe Koopman says they’ve been plowing snow for a week since last Tuesday. Crews would generally start their days at 5 am and end at 5 pm – and then do it all again the next day.

He says some days they didn’t make any progress. With the extreme cold weather, they had more breakdowns than usual, but Koopman says the guys did a great job of getting things back on the road.

“We will keep at it until we get all the roads open and the snow pushed back.”

Koopman says overall, with that much snow over that length of time, things went well. “I am proud of my crew and their positive attitude. I’d like to thank the public for their patience and understanding and allowing us the time needed to get the roads open.”

Sometime this week, the County will need to replenish their salt/sand supply so they’re ready for the next storm – whenever that may be.

Meanwhile, the Iowa DOT says state highways, federal highways and interstates may continue to see some partially-covered roads and icy patches until the temperatures start to warm up.
