Names Released: Four Delhi Residents Killed in Friday Van Crash

Authorities have released the names of the four Delhi residents who were killed in a van crash near Grundy Center on Friday morning.

The Iowa State Patrol says three children and one adult were killed when the passenger van they were riding in lost control on Highway 20. They have been identified as one-year-old Marlin Borntreger, two-year-old Rebecca Borntreger, four-year-old Emma Borntreger and 22-year-old Ervin Borntreger.

The accident happened just after 6:30 am when the westbound van slid off the snow-and-ice-covered roadway and flipped in the median. Four people were ejected. No one in the van was wearing a seatbelt and none of the children were in car seats. The van came to rest in the eastbound lanes of Highway 20.

The driver has been identified as 33-year-old Sara Werner of Hopkinton.

Three other children in the car were injured. One-year-old Joseph Borntreger was taken to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, one-year-old Jacob Borntreger was taken to Grundy Memorial and three-year-old Ervin Borntreger was taken to Grundy Memorial.

Several other adults in the vehicle were injured. 21-year-old Edna Borntreger was taken to UIHC, 25-year-old Fannie Borntreger was taken to Grundy Memorial, 26-year-old Jake Herschberger was taken to Grundy Memorial, 27-year-old Mahlon Borntreger was taken to Grundy Memorial, 29-year-old Mary Herschberger was taken to MercyOne in Waterloo and 30-year-old Adam Yoder was taken to MercyOne in Waterloo.

The crash remains under investigation.
