Duane Willis Sherman – Manchester

Duane Willis Sherman, 90, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2023, at Marietta’s Place in
Manchester. He was born on January 8, 1933, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Elmer and Nellie (Adams) Sherman of Edgewood.
Duane was a 1950 graduate of Edgewood High School and after graduation went to work for Edgewood Building Service. He
then decided to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy in June of 1952. Duane proudly served during the
Korean War in the Pacific Theater on the USS Toledo CA-133, a heavy cruiser along with other duties in San Diego, California,
Jacksonville, Florida, and Portland, Oregon. Duane was honorably discharged in June of 1956 and was a 50-year Legionnaire
member of the Edgewood Legion Post #512.

On October 10, 1954, Duane was united in marriage to Joan Johnson at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manchester and
together they made their home in Edgewood. To this union two sons, David and Daniel, along with two daughters, Judy and
Jeanie, completed the family. Duane was a longtime member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manchester since his
marriage to Joan in 1954.

Duane worked as a carpenter for Edgewood Building Service, then Spahn and Rose Lumber Company, until he started his own
construction business in Edgewood known as Sherman Construction in 1974. He built many quality homes in Edgewood and
the surrounding area. Duane was a hard-working carpenter who often thought of others’ welfare before himself. He also gave
back to his community and church through volunteering his services, especially when construction advice and help was
needed. Duane was not a man of many words, but his actions spoke volumes about his character. After his retirement from the
construction business, Duane and Joan moved and made their residence in Manchester.

Duane was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and will be greatly missed by all who
knew him.

Survivors include is wife of 68 years, Joan Sherman of Manchester; his three children, Dave (Doris) Sherman of Manchester,
Judy (Dave) Lueken of Edgewood; and Jeanie (Scott) Cabalka of Manchester; seven grandchildren, Jessica (Phil) Parsons, Justin
(Marissa) Lueken, Stephanie (Travis) Gudenkauf, Jennifer (Jordan) Perrinjaquet, Shyla (Taylor) Beaman, Tiffany (Jayme)
Digman, and Austin (Nicolle) Cabalka; 16 great-grandchildren, Lane and Croix Gudenkauf, Skyla and Stella Digman, Alexandra,
Ezra, Julian, and Micah Parsons, Lawson and Nova Lueken, Mack, Zeke, Huck, and Beau Perrinjaquet, Ingrid and June Beaman;
and many friends.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Nellie Sherman; a son, Daniel; a brother, Keith Sherman and his wife
Ruth; two sisters, Elsie Dunlap, and Lois Johnson and her husband Bob.

Duane’s family would like to thank Marietta’s Place, St. Croix Hospice and Dr. Gerst of RMC for their compassionate care.

Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 23, 2023, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manchester, Iowa, with
Reverend Tony D. Ede officiating.

Visitation: 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester. Friends may
also call Thursday at First Evangelical Lutheran Church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Interment with Military Honors: Edgewood Cemetery-Edgewood, Iowa
