Drag Race Car Driver Killed in Tri-State Raceway Crash

A driver died in an accident at Tri-State Raceway in Earlville on Sunday.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office says a 911 call came in around 10:30 am, reporting that the driver of a drag race car had been severely injured in an accident.

The Sheriff’s Office and Earlville Ambulance were dispatched to the scene.

After examining the scene and interviewing witnesses, it was determined that the drag race car had just finished a race, but at the end of the dragstrip, the driver did not slow down nor did the parachute deploy. The vehicle continued through a sand trap safety area and left the dragstrip, flipping into an adjacent cornfield.

The driver, 74-year old Gary McMann of Marengo, was pronounced dead after being transported to Regional Medical Center in Manchester.

The incident is under investigation by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, NHRA officials and the Office of the State Medical Examiner.
