Severe Storms Bring Strong Winds to Eastern Iowa

Severe weather moved through eastern Iowa on Tuesday afternoon, bringing the threat of tornadoes.

At one point around 3:30 pm, three separate Tornado Warnings were in effect for portions of the KMCH listening area. While there was a report of a wall cloud headed towards Winthrop and a report of a funnel cloud just west of Alburnett, there were no reports of tornadoes touching the ground in our area.

The National Weather Service also issued numerous Severe Thunderstorm Warnings, with torrential rains, quarter-sized hail and winds up to 70 miles per hour. A semi blew onto its side on Highway 20 southwest of Winthrop, with the highway blocked for a short time. A semi also jack-knifed in the median of Highway 151 in Jones County. Delaware County Emergency Management says the only structural damage report they received was damage to an small older garden shed near Edgewood. Several power poles were reported down or leaning, including in Dubuque and just west of Dyersville. Trees and tree branches were also reported down in parts of the KMCH listening area, including in Manchester near the Delaware County Fairgrounds and Gales Avenue (top photo).

Delaware County Emergency Management Coordinator Mandy Bieber says around ninety homes in the county are without electricity at this hour, but crews are working to restore power.

You can find several reports and photos of storm damage on our KMCH Facebook page – and feel free to share your reports there as well.
