Russell Using Intoxication as Defense in Fatal Monticello Shooting

The man accused of fatally shooting an employee outside the Monticello Fareway store last fall plans to use intoxication as his defense during trial.

Nathan Russell of East Dubuque, Illinois, is charged with First Degree Murder, Going Armed with Intent and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. He has pleaded not guilty to all three charges.

Monticello Police say Aaron McAtee had been outside of the Fareway store near the loading dock on the morning of November 7th when he was shot in what appeared to have been a random act of violence.

Russell was apprehended two hours later in Hopkinton. McAtee died from his injuries.

Russell’s trial is scheduled to begin August 6th in Jones County. The Jones County Attorney’s Office says there has been a request to change the venue, but the Court has not yet issued a ruling on that request.
