Authorities Investigating Death of Two Dubuque County Residents

Dubuque County authorities are investigating the death of two residents, including a child.

The Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office says deputies, along with a State Medical Examiner Investigator, responded to 9866 Haxbylane Road near La Motte around 7 pm Wednesday for a report of a possible homicide. Deputies found 32-year old Tana Poppe dead when they arrived, with an investigation indicating the death was the result of foul play. Further investigation determined the victim had two minor children, a 13-year old and a 5-month old, staying with her – but authorities didn’t find them at the home.

A short time later, the Sheriff’s Office learned a person of interest, later identified as 37-year old Alexander Grunke, was involved in a vehicle pursuit in Dane County, Wisconsin. The 5-month old was turned over to a random home in Wisconsin before the vehicle pursuit started. During the pursuit, the vehicle was disabled and the occupants attempted to flee. One of the occupants, the missing 13-year old, was later found dead of unknown causes. Grunke entered a home and a standoff ensued with authorities from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office – it ended when Grunke was found dead inside the home.

The Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office is continuing their investigation, with cooperation and assistance from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office. All remaining leads will be fully investigated to ensure there is no further danger to the public.
