A Buchanan County inmate died on Sunday.
The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office says correctional officers were performing routine cell checks around 2:30 am Sunday when they discovered a male inmate unresponsive in his cell.
They called for help and started CPR, with Sheriff’s EMS Rescue Deputies and AMR Ambulance arriving at the Buchanan County Correctional Center to provide additional life-saving measures – but the inmate was ultimately pronounced dead.
The inmate has been identified as 19-year old Jaden Antoine Johnson of Independence.
The Sheriff’s Office says at this time, his preliminary cause of death appears to be asphyxiation via suicide. The State Medical Examiner’s Office will be conducting an autopsy.
The incident remains under investigation.
